Inpatient meals

Inpatient meals are served at ward level three times per day providing breakfast, lunch and dinner, with additional snack and beverage rounds operating 24-hours a day.

Our menus cover a variety of options, including hot and cold items, as well as vegetarian and vegan choices.

If you have special dietary requirements, please do let us know before your stay or on admittance. Ward and therapy staff will be happy to assist.

Bringing in food from home

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) must ensure ensure that any food brought into our hospitals does not pose a risk to any of our patients.

Food brought into any of our hospitals should meet the following criteria, allowing for any dietary needs and in conjunction with a balanced diet. 

  • Food Packaging must be sealed
  • Any products should have a use by/best before date that has not been exceeded
  • Clear guidance on the nutritional and allergen information
  • Liquids must be sealed by the manufacturer with tamper-proof lids and bottle tops
  • Home produced food is not permitted as per the Trust’s food hygiene procedure (UHB are unable to reheat home cooked foods)
  • Refrigeration of small quantities of sealed foods e.g. yoghurt, soya and nutritional products may be stored with prior approval of the nurse-in-charge. This will be stored in a fridge, showing the patient’s names, ward, and bed space (any unidentifiable stock will be discarded)
  • Nuts or food products containing nuts are not permitted
  • In compliance with our food hygiene policy, products containing raw meat or raw fish are not permitted
